You could work in a development team, an IT support function, a digital agency or the technology side of a business in another industry. You can pursue roles like:

• Assistant software developer or applications programmer

• Web support programmer

• Database support programmer

• Digital media developer or authoring specialist

• Business analyst or information technology analyst

• Assistant IT team leader or project leader

Some universities may also credit this diploma towards a degree in information technology or computer science, though you’d need to confirm that with them directly.

You’ll complete 20 units covering web development from the front end through to the database layer. On the client side, you’ll create markup language documents, develop complex web page layouts and write cascading style sheets. You’ll then produce client-side scripts, apply structured query language in relational databases, integrate databases with websites and create REST APIs. You’ll also design user experience solutions and lead a team.

Yes. You’ll work through course materials entirely online, taking anywhere from 12 to 30 months depending on your pace. Your assessments include case studies, workplace scenarios, projects and roleplays. Your trainer will answer your questions by phone, Zoom or email between 9am and 5.30pm, Monday to Friday. All you need is a reasonably capable laptop or PC. You can find the recommended specifications on this page. 

No formal prerequisites apply, although we designed this diploma for people with basic IT experience or those moving across from a related industry. You’ll need basic skills in Microsoft Word and Excel before you start. Motivated beginners also do well here, so your enthusiasm for the material is more important than your technical background at enrolment.

You’ll learn to work as part of a development team, which covers the technical units plus managing client problems, promoting cyber security awareness and implementing quality assurance for websites. Your free membership to the Australian Information Security Association (AISA) gives you access to industry events, training and a professional network. You’ll also work on projects throughout the course so you can apply each skill practically as you learn it.

You might find this course to be a good fit if you want to work in web development and prefer to learn by making things. Two specialisations are available, one in front- and back-end web development and one in cyber security and advanced networking, so you can concentrate on the area that interests you most.
