Course Topics

The Certificate IV has seven core units and 13 elective units. These cover a range of the most important skills in terms of technical ability, client service, and the practical side of working in the industry.

Module 1

Work effectively in the IT industry

Being successful in the IT industry is about more than technical brilliance. You need to know how to work collaboratively on projects, apply your critical thinking skills to new challenges, and comply with the law. This module will help you get to grips with the basics, so you feel confident and ready to get to work.

Module 2

Client-side development

Client-side development means taking care of everything that the end user sees and can do in a web application. This takes a lot more than programming skills – you’ve got to really understand what makes users tick. Module 2 is about upskilling in the technical and creative aspects of client-side development.

Module 3

Enhancing a website

Great websites require more than just a great build. You’ve got to stay on top of improving and enhancing the structure and content. Module 3 takes you through the essentials of updating content and accessibility standards. You’ll also cover search engine optimisation, to help keep your site at the top of search results.

Module 4

Programming basics

Module 4 is about the basic aspects of programming that are the same no matter what language you’re working in. This is the stuff that your non-techy friends and family think of when you say you’re studying IT (cue super-realistic TV-drama hacking scene). You’ll learn how to build from scratch, test code, apply basic debugging techniques, and more.

Module 5

Managing quality

Quality control (QC) responsibility is the step between being a junior developer, and taking on a leadership role. Module 5 is all about the QC skills that bosses love to see, from testing to security risk management.
