How to get the most out of your online study experience

Studying online offers flexibility for people with busy lifestyles. Students find they can combine family, work and social commitments more effectively when they are able to self-pace their learning rate. For some, this is a new way of learning and can be a little overwhelming. Check out these tips on how to work smarter, not harder, in order to successfully manage your course work.

Know yourself

Are you a morning or evening person? Do you work better in a tidy environment or away from home? Do you need music, sunshine or exercise for inspiration? Is a reward necessary to keep you motivated? Identify the factors that optimise your learning output and progression and build them into your study plan.

Get to know your LMS

The Monarch Institute LMS (Learning Management System) is super simple to use. It’ll make your online study experience simpler than you could’ve imagined. On the LMS you’ll find everything from videos and webinar links, presentations, learning materials and quizzes, to two-click assignment submission buttons. Your trainer’s details are also pinned to the top left corner, so it’s always easy to get in touch. You’ll also find the link to join your course Facebook group, where other like-minded students are waiting to share their study stories. And if you can’t find something? Call us, we are here to help you figure it out.

Break it up

If you know what’s in the course you can plan accordingly. Consider the structure and course content and be sure to understand the extent of reading and assessment required so that you know what to expect in terms of study load. Try dividing your study into manageable pieces of learning and make a weekly date with your LMS. This will help you stick to your plan and can help you become overwhelmed with the entirety of your course.

Know what help is available

Your trainer is available to speak to you at a time that works for you. Stuck on a question? Can’t get your head around a theory? Unsure how to approach a short answer assessment? Get in touch with your trainer, via email, phone or Zoom. Every question is important and students are supported by course experts throughout your studies.

The Facebook group for your course (you’ll find the link in your LMS) is great for coursework-related discussions and for getting a fresh perspective on something that’s been challenging you.

Start small

Procrastination often creeps in if you’re having trouble starting a topic, or if you’re confused. The key is to start small, and give yourself short bursts of timeframes on a topic, just to get started. Some of our students like to use lists to kickstart a routine, and these can really help when you’re stuck in a rut. They are most useful when used in conjunction with making priorities, and scheduling.

And don’t forget…

Remind yourself of the investment you have made and praise yourself for committing to achieving this qualification! As you progress, the finish line will change from a distant objective to real and imminent achievement.
And if you need extra support – don’t hesitate to contact your trainers or one of our friendly Course Consultants.

Good luck!
