So you’re thinking of studying, but not sure about the time commitment? By planning ahead, you can reduce the stress of managing the balance of studying and living, and get on which enjoying life. Planning your time allows you to spread your work over your course timeframe, and gives you guidance and direction throughout your study experience.
Here’s a few tips that can help you manage your time:
Make a list.
The first stage of improving your time management is to list absolutely everything that you have to do. This may sound obvious, but speaking from experience, most students tend to leave important tasks until the last minute, which can impact on the quality of their work and their overall grade.
Set out goals.
Take the time to set out your short, mid and long term goals. You’ll find things are not such a shock when you see that next due date.
Find your tools.
Whether it’s an online app, a pin-up planner, or a piece of paper on your desk, find an organising tool that works well for you and add your list of priorities to it. Include any deadlines as well as work, events, and appointments, and make a note of how much time each priority will take out of your schedule.
Chunk out your time.
Know how much time is involved in each section of your course. Is it likely to take you longer to read your least favourite topic of that next unit? Estimate how much time you’ll need to set aside for each section.
Time for mistakes.
Include time in your schedule to repeat revision of your course materials. There’s nothing worse than getting to the end of that tough section only to realise you actually need to spend another 3 days revising it. Add it in now, and at least it won’t be additional time.
