What is a professional development?

Eligibility for self education expenses

Can you claim self education expenses?

Monarch’s courses are either formal qualifications or lead to formal qualifications and are therefore tax-deductible when they meet the following criteria:

  • The course maintains or improves the specific skills or knowledge you require in your current role, or
  • Completion of the course is likely to result in an increase in your current salary.

Which education expenses can I claim on my tax return?

Along with your tuition, you can claim the following work related self education expenses if you study an online course:

  • Cost of computer consumables (printer ink, software, USBs etc.)
  • Purchase of equipment or technical instruments
  • Home office running costs
  • Internet usage (excluding connection fees)
  • Phone calls
  • Postage
  • Stationery and textbooks
  • Purchase of trade, professional, or academic journals

Consulting the ATO about self education expenses being tax-deductible

If you’re planning on claiming costs for self education, it’s best to consult with the ATO to confirm that the course you’re enrolling in is directly related to your current role, and/or that the course is likely to result in a higher salary. Whilst you can’t claim the fees if they are paid by your employer, or any type of working from home occupancy expenses, the Australian Taxation Office says you’re able to claim a deduction for your general course expenses.
